4 โ Stories: Character, Desire, Conflict (And What Comes Next)
Simpler than every thousand-page hero's-journey book you've ever put down. CDC โ overt/covert โ moral โ CTA. A story you can tell on the spot, every time, that moves the buyer from conscious mind into subconscious mind where the defenses drop.
"I'm me. I'm Brad. I grew up in New York. I sucked at marketing.
And it was standing in the way of what I really wanted โ which was to be a business owner. So I had to learn it.
I went on two journeys. The overt one: Tony Robbins, one marketer after another, trials, tribulations, the boring uphill grind. The covert one โ the one that actually mattered โ was that I learned charity. I learned contribution. I learned growth. I became a better person.
Then I made my first sale. Then I scaled. Then I won a million-dollar prize from ClickFunnels.
And the moral is: it doesn't take just the overt work. It takes the covert transformation too. That's the thing nobody tells you."
That whole thing โ start to finish โ is a story. It follows a formula. And the formula is way simpler than the thousand-page hero's-journey books you've already tried to read.
Why stories at all
A story moves the listener from conscious mind into subconscious mind โ and that's where the defenses drop. Everyone's been raised on stories since they were four years old. The brain trusts the shape of a story before it evaluates the content. That trust is your opening.
The spine โ CDC
- Character โ who is this about?
- Desire โ what do they want?
- Conflict โ what's in the way?
Little Red Riding Hood. Character. She wants to visit grandma. Desire. Big bad wolf. Conflict. That's the spine of every story ever told.
The two journeys โ overt and covert
- Overt โ what happened. The visible plot. Trials, actions, milestones, wins.
- Covert โ how the character transformed underneath. The identity shift. The becoming.
Most operators tell only the overt story. They list their credentials, name-drop, list the milestones. But the covert journey is what buyers actually identify with โ because they're on their own version of it. Skip the covert and your story feels like a rรฉsumรฉ. Include it and your story feels like their story.
The landing โ moral, then CTA
Moral. Reiterate the lesson. Say it plainly. "The moral of the story is X." Don't leave it implied. State it. Buyers should be able to repeat your moral back to a friend after one hearing.
CTA. What did they do next? Or, better: what should the listener do next? Sometimes the CTA is the next action ("book the call"). Sometimes it's just showing what you did next after the story ended, and letting the listener infer their own version. Either works.
Do this now
Write one story you can tell on the spot โ right now:
- Character. One sentence. Who's this about? (Usually you, sometimes a customer.)
- Desire. One sentence. What did they want?
- Conflict. One sentence. What was in the way?
- Overt beats. Three to five. What they visibly did โ trainings taken, people they learned from, actions taken, first result.
- Covert beats. Two to three. What changed underneath. Values learned, identity shift, becoming.
- Moral. One sentence. State it plainly.
- Next step. One sentence. What did they do next / what should the listener do next.
Total: ten to twelve sentences. That's a full story. Practice telling it out loud until it feels boring to you (that's when it sounds fresh to everyone else).
Bonus: feed your ten-to-twelve-sentence story into AI with this prompt:
Here's my story: [PASTE YOUR STORY]
Rewrite this in three lengths, keeping the same beats (Character, Desire, Conflict, overt/covert journey, moral, next step) but changing density:
1. A 30-second version (for a DM or reply).
2. A 90-second version (for a call opener).
3. A 3-minute version (for a stage or long-form video).
Keep my voice โ don't polish the humanity out of it.
Now you have a story for a DM, a call opener, and a stage.
You already have the raw material. Your life is a story. Your customers' lives are stories. What's missing is the shape.
Get the shape and you can tell any story on the spot โ in a DM, on a call, on a stage, in an ad. Same beats every time, different words, different lengths. The buyer's subconscious does the rest.
Next up โ Lesson 5 ยท Causes โ the fifth string. The one that moves civilizations when the audience is at the right level of their journey.
