1 — Marketing Is Empathy at Scale
The thesis the whole rant hangs on: marketing is pulling nuggets of gold out of real conversations and packaging them so people say 'this is really valuable.' Then doing it at scale.
The thesis: marketing is simply empathy at scale. It's pulling the little nuggets of gold out of real conversations and packaging them up in such a way that people go, "oh — this is really valuable."
The gold sluice
Ever watch those gold mining shows? They move mountains of dirt through sluices and giant machines, and at the end of the week there's four ounces of gold in a tiny vial. All that material, sifted, for that.
That's marketing — twice over. First, the dirt is your leads: most of the people your message reaches will never buy, and the sluice still pays — the miners move all that rock for four ounces and somehow it works out in the end. They keep doing it. (Lesson 4 is that math.) Second, nobody hands you the nugget. You mine it — and in 2026 the mine is your own recorded life:
- Every coaching call, sales call, interview, and hot seat you're on — record it.
- Transcribe everything. AI makes this free now.
- Sift the transcripts for the moments where someone leaned in — the question that got asked twice, the phrase that landed, the objection that kept coming back.
- Those moments ARE your lead magnets, your ads, your emails. You don't invent marketing; you excavate it.
This very series is the receipt: it was a live call where the questions got good, and instead of letting that gold wash away, it got transcribed, sifted, and packaged into the thing you're reading. That loop — conversation → transcript → nuggets → asset — is the whole modern content machine.
Why empathy is the mechanism
The nuggets work because they came from a real person's real confusion. When you package the answer, the next thousand people with the same confusion feel understood — and people buy from whoever understands them. That's why mined content beats brainstormed content: brainstorms produce what you think is interesting; conversations produce what they actually asked.
Do this
- List every recurring conversation you're already having — sales calls, onboarding calls, support threads, interviews.
- Turn recording ON for all of them, starting this week. (Yes, with permission.)
- Pick ONE past recording or thread and pull out five moments where the other person leaned in.
Keep those five. The rest of this series turns them into money.
Next: where those nuggets go — the funnel that still works in 2026.
