Rung 4 — Semantic Recall (Find It Without Naming It)
You don't remember what you called it. /search finds it anyway — by meaning, not by name. Vector search demystified in sixty seconds, no math.
The win: you surface something from weeks ago that you never explicitly saved — by describing what it was about, not what it was called.
The moment this is for
Three weeks ago, mid-session, you had an idea about pricing. You didn't /remember it. You don't know what session it was in. In the old world, that idea is gone — you'd scroll history for ten minutes and give up.
/search pricing idea about the annual tier — and it surfaces. Not because anything matched the exact words, but because the search runs on meaning.
Vector search in sixty seconds (no math)
Picture a giant wall where every thought from every session gets pinned — and thoughts that mean similar things get pinned close together. "Annual pricing idea," "yearly plan discount," "charge once a year" all cluster in the same corner of the wall, even though they share almost no words.
When you /search, the agent walks to the part of the wall your question points at and grabs what's pinned there. That's the whole trick. Meaning has a location, and similar meanings are neighbors.
Do this
- Think of something you talked about with your agent in the last month but never saved. An idea, a decision, a half-finished thought.
/searchfor it — describe it loosely, the way you'd describe it to a colleague. "that thing about onboarding emails feeling too pushy"- Watch it come back from a session you'd forgotten existed.
- Now try searching for something you DID
/remember— notice search finds named memories too. Naming is for retrieval-by-habit; search is the safety net under everything.
The rule of thumb
Name it if you'll want it in a week. Search for it if you'll want it in a year.
Workflows and preferences you use constantly — /remember them, retrieval should be instant and exact. Everything else — the ideas, the discussions, the maybes — just let it accumulate. Search means nothing is ever really lost.
The takeaway
You now have all four tiers: journal, snapshots, named memories, semantic search. One rung left — putting them together on purpose for a workflow you actually run.
Next rung: design your memory layer.
